Adelaide Road

Adelaide Road, Glenageary.  House extension and alteration.

This project is set in an attractive 1930’s house, situated in Glenageary, County Dublin, and involved general alterations and extension to provide a new kitchen and dining space, a new home office and exercise space, an en-suite with dressing area, and to provide a new access stair to the existing attic storey home office. The project also entailed the improvement of existing spaces including the main bathroom and bedrooms.

The rear extension was conceived to make connection between the existing house and its beautiful mature rear garden. Working with timber as a material, we came up with the concept to make an oak post and beam structure for the rear extension, and to detail this in a contemporary manner.

We fully expressed the timber structure to distinguish the kitchen and dining areas within the plan by forming recesses between the columns and separating each of these recesses with glass, resulting in a punctuated colonnade of timber columns on both sides of the spaces.

The house had practically no insulation, and all the windows were leaky single glazed sash windows, which made the house very cold and hard to heat. We have installed high levels of insulation and new windows throughout, which dramatically reduce heat loss and improve energy efficiency. The building energy rating went from a G to a B3 as a result of the works that were carried out.
